RiscOS NetHack 3.0 PL10 Distribution Disk
Archimedes port by H.Rogers (rogersh@uk.ac.man.cs). This is the
sixth release, packaged as a RiscOS application and featuring color and
UnixLib v3.5c (8/12/1991).
NetHack 3.0 PL10 takes ~1200k minimum application space. (I.e. you need
2Mb RAM).

ReadMe: this file
UL_ReadMe: extracts from UnixLib v3.5c ReadMe file
Installation:
Hard disk users: copy the application onto the hard disk. Copy the etc
directory into the root ($) directory of the hard disk. Rename !NetHack.!Run_HD
to !NetHack.!Run. The etc directory *must* be in the root ($) directory on
the hard disk unless you set UnixFS$/etc (see UnixLib details below). If you
are already using UnixLib you should already have a /etc directory...
Floppy disk users: rename !NetHack.!Run_FD to !NetHack.!Run and
copy all the asterisked files listed above into the root ($) directory
of a blank second floppy disk. This second disk is then the "game disk";
the first disk (this disk) is the "loader disk".
To get started:
Run !NetHack. Use the '?' command to get help... Note that if you
want to see color, you must have both the 'color' and 'standout' options on.
'color' should be on by default, but 'standout' needs to be set (either
online using the 'O' command, or using NETHACKOPTIONS as described below).
Use '^R' (CTRL R) to force a redraw of the screen.
You can run !NetHack with command line options:
-u followed by a name sets the player name and overrides any name
from NETHACKOPTIONS, USER, LOGNAME, or getlogin(), which will otherwise be
tried in order.
A playername suffix or a separate option consisting of one
of -A -B -C -E -H -K -P -R -S -T -V -W can be used to determine the
character role.
-s alone will print out the list of your scores. It may be followed
by arguments -A -B -C -E -H -K -P -R -S -T -V -W to print the scores of
Archeologists, Barbarians, Cave(wo)men, Elves, Healers, Knights,
Priest(esse)s, Rogues, Samurai, Tourists, Valkyries, or Wizards. It may
also be followed by one or more player names to print the scores of the
players mentioned, or by 'all' to print out all scores.
-D or -X option will start the game in a special non-scoring discovery
mode. -D will, if the player is the game administrator, start in debugging
(wizard) mode instead.
Environment variables:
NETHACKOPTIONS:
Used to set startup NetHack options. Eg:
set NETHACKOPTIONS name:Milamber,!verbose,standout,color,time,catname:Tiger,dogname:Ferox
Full documentation for NETHACKOPTIONS is available online in the game.
TERM:
Set TERM <terminal> changes the terminal lookup in $.etc.termcap.
You must have a termcap entry for the new terminal in this file. "acorn12"
is the default. "acorn0" gives a mode 0 screen.
Unixlib specific details:
NetHack is compiled using UnixLib v3.5c. There are several environment
variables and filenaming conventions particular to UnixLib programs, which are
documented in an abridged copy of the UnixLib v3.5c ReadMe file called
UL_ReadMe. Read the latter for further information.
Authors:
Jay Fenlason (+ Kenny Woodland, Mike Thome and Jon Payne) wrote the
original hack, very much like rogue (but full of bugs).
Andries Brouwer continuously deformed their sources into an entirely
different game.
Mike Stephenson has continued the perversion of sources, adding
various warped character classes and sadistic traps with the help of many
strange people who reside in that place between the worlds, the Usenet Zone.
A number of these miscreants are immortalized in the historical roll of
dishonor and various other places.
The resulting mess is now called NetHack, to denote its development
by the Usenet. Andries Brouwer has made this request for the distinction,
as he may eventually release a new version of his own.
